Is yellow gold coming back….?

The fashion world is constantly changing, evolving and revolving; the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s stylings always seem to re-appear in the clothing styles of today in a new way, shape or form. With the changing fashions, what is popular in jewellery also changes. Whether the trend is the simplistic “classic” diamond jewellery, or more ornate sparkly designs like the halo currently, the trend can change right down to the colour of the gold. For quite some time, the desired colour of gold has been the white or platinum, and because of this, many women with original wedding sets in yellow gold have even been making the switch to white. But could it be time for yellow gold to make its comeback? If you look at the trends, it appears it might be that time. The warm gold tones are popular this year, which is working in gold’s favour! Yellow has been seen all over women’s fashion magazines; the sunny hue was featured in many places in the recent New York Fashion Week, right down to the gold coloured nail polish! Many clothes, bags, and shoes for a while now have been featuring “yellow” coloured accents. And many stores that carry costume jewellery accessories have been showing more and more in the yellow colour than the white, so it only makes sense for the jewellery world to start making that shift as well.

High-end jewellery companies like Cartier and Bulgari have started to show larger statement pieces in yellow gold, which in turn has started to have an influence of the rest of the jewellery world. I believe the real shift happened at this year’s Oscars when Lupita Nyong’o rocked up wearing stunning pieces of yellow gold jewellery. She was dressed from head to fingers in Fred Leighton, including an 18k yellow gold and diamond headband, a 19th Century yellow gold and diamond coiled snake bracelet, an 18k yellow gold and rose-cut diamond spiked crescent earrings, an 18k yellow gold Frog ring, a 19th Century yellow gold, pearl and diamond ring, a 19th Century yellow gold and opal ring, and finally a 1960s 18k gold, turquoise, and diamond ring. These amazing pieces put yellow gold jewellery back in the front line, (not to mention the fact she won best supporting actress). But she is not the only celebrity to be wearing bold gold jewellery; Jessica Alba, Beyoncé, and Angelina Jolie have all been spotted wearing yellow gold jewellery.

More and more people are requesting yellow gold and it is no wonder. It’s rich, beautiful and the way gold was meant to be! This time around, people don’t want their white gold jewellery to be misinterpreted as silver; nobody buys luxury brass jewellery, so if you see it’s yellow…you know its gold! For the first half of 2014, Canada and the U.S. gold jewellery sales have risen, and this particular trend is only expected to continue as more and more people seek out that special small luxury item. Women are also leaning towards the bigger heavier pieces…many of these being statement pieces, and at the same time, an investment. As far as yellow gold jewellery styles go, bold gold coloured watches, large gold hoops, and chandelier earrings are always popular. Trendier pieces include ear cuffs, chain style bracelets, chain style necklaces, and bangles. Layering up gold is very popular right now as well, wearing a 26 -inch gold chain with a shorter chain with a pendant in the center, with thin stackable bangles, bracelets, and rings. Since the larger look is all the rage, many of the larger pieces tend to be a bit thinner, with a lot of open work, which gives them that BIG look with a lesser gold weight and price. Even yellow gold engagement rings and wedding band are being requested more and more. It is only a matter of time before jewellery stores make the full switch back to yellow.

But regardless of the current trend, old can be mixed with new, white gold and yellow gold combinations can be worn together; many pieces of jewellery even come that way! So there is no need to worry that your existing jewellery won’t match with what is up and coming.
